Message From the Chair

My name is Amy Boyle, and it is my honor to serve as the Chair of the Younger Lawyers Division for the Federal Bar Association for the 2022-2023 term. The YLD represents the newest additions to the federal bar, composed of members who are 40 years old or younger or have been admitted to practice for less than 10 years. It is governed by a Board of Directors, composed of 22 directors and officers from throughout the federal circuits.

The YLD is the FBA’s largest section or division, with over 4,000 members, and it serves approximately one-fourth of the FBA’s total membership. Our goal is to encourage younger lawyers to be engaged in the FBA and to offer programs relevant to our diverse membership. To that end, we serve as a resource to local Chapters and other Sections that are looking to engage with younger lawyers.

I am very excited about the events we have planned for this year.  Since 2020, our Board has pivoted and found new and innovative ways to engage with our members.  While we will continue to host events virtually throughout the year, we are excited to return to much our in-person programming this year.

This year, the Thurgood Marshall Memorial Moot Court Competition will be held in-person in the Washington D.C. area in March 2023.  The Supreme Court Swearing In Ceremony is taking place on May 18.  The Summer Law Clerk Program will continue to offer new lawyers and law students an intimate glimpse of legal positions at the federal agencies.  The YLD also continues to host and support Rising Professionals Symposia throughout the year in various locations across the country and presentations on the nuts and bolts of practicing in various legal areas.  The YLD is also hosting a CLE on May 31, 2023 with Dr. Artika Tyner regarding inclusive leadership.

The YLD remains committed to honoring the best of our ranks by continuing to sponsor and award the Younger Federal Lawyers Awards and Robyn J. Spalter Outstanding Achievement Award.

If I can encourage you to do one thing, it’s to get involved. We need each of you to help us make these events happen. For more information on how to get involved, please become a YLD member, join a committee by contacting the committee chair, and keep up to date on our activities by reading the YLD Perspectives, our newsletter, which is published three times a year. For the most up-to-date information, join us on LinkedIn and follow us on Twitter.  I look forward to working with you this year!
